1.   Book Organization


Book Format: This book uses the HTML format which allows great organizational flexibility.

Book Layout: The book contains over 830 8.5x11 pages of information, organized into Sections instead of Chapters. The Section Method allows large amounts of information to be precisely organized, and easily retreived. Almost 1,000 sections and sub-sections are used. Each major book section is assigned its own HTML file. Where necessary, additional HTML files are used for sub-sections throughout the book. Over 125 HTML files are used with file content ranging in size from 1 to 36 - 8.5x11 pages. The files are linked sequentially.

The following example illustrates the Section Method:

Subject Format: A unique subject format is used for the subject headings throughout the book. The general format is:

  • primary subject (secondary subject - tertiary subject - etc.)

2.   Page Organization


Page Format: All book pages are designed around the HTML format.

Page Layout: Each HTML page is designed to look the same with 5 page elements. From top to bottom, they are:

  • Book Title Block: A bordered block sits at the top of the HTML page, displaying the book's title and subtitle.

  • Primary Book Links (Top): A set of primary book links are formatted within a bordered block to appear just below the book title block. Typical links include:

    [Front Cover]: This book link takes you to the book's front cover.

    [Contents]: This book link takes you to the book's Table of Contents page. A detailed Table of Contents page can also be accessed from it. See the Table of Contents page notes for details.

    [Previous]: This book link takes you to the book's previous HTML page. It moves you sequentially backward through the "pages" of the book.

    [Next]: This book link takes you to the book's next HTML page. It moves you sequentially forward through the "pages" of the book.

    [Back Cover]: This book link takes you to the book's back cover.

    [Section]: This entry indicates the Section of the book being displayed.

    [Pages]: This entry indicates how many 8.5x11 print pages are contained in the current HTML page being displayed.

  • Book Page: A book page is formatted to appear just below the previously mentioned Primary Book Links (Top). It looks like a book page, is framed with a border, has page margins, and contains the text content of the current HTML page.

  • Primary Book Links (Bottom): Another set of duplicate primary book links is formatted to appear just below the bottom of the Book Page.

  • Copyright Information: Brief copyright information is displayed along the very bottom of the HTML page.

Hypertext Links: Hypertext linking is used extensively to facilitate finding information and moving around in the book.



3.   Book Reading


A variety of navigation, viewing, and searching features are available to enhance the reading experience. They include:

  • HTML Page Features: As described previously, each page contains primary book links located just above and below the Book Page. The links allow you to jump to the beginning, end, previous HTML page, next HTML page, or Table of Contents.

  • HTML Book Features: The HTML compiler software, used in producing this ebook, provides additional handy navigation, search, and viewing features conveniently accessed from: drop-down menus, a pop-up menu, a Toolbar, and a Status Bar. The following are brief feature descriptions:

    [Back]: Allows you to retrace your page views. Goes back to the previously loaded HTML page. A Toolbar button, and menu option.

    [Drop-Down Menus]: Contain the Toolbar button options, on/off toggles (for Toolbar and Status Bar), Refresh option, etc. Displayed in top left corner of screen.

    [Find]: Search for any text within the current HTML page. A Toolbar button, and menu option.

    [Forward]: Allows you to retrace your page views. Goes forward to the next previously loaded HTML page. A Toolbar button, and menu option.

    [Next]: Goes to the next page in the book. A Toolbar button, and menu option.

    [Pop-up Menu]: Contains frequently used features. Displayed when the reader right-clicks anywhere on a page.

    [Previous]: Goes to the previous page in the book. A Toolbar button, and menu option.

    [Size]: Changes the display size of the text fonts. A Toolbar button, and menu option.

    [Status Bar]: Displays helpful messages including: feature descriptions, URLs of highlighted hyperlinks, etc. Displayed in the bottom left corner of the screen. Can be toggled on/off from the drop-down menus.

    [Toolbar]: Contains available ebook tools. Displayed across the top of the ebook screen. Can be toggled on/off from the drop-down menus.

    [Tool Tips]: Brief information about ebook tools. Displayed in the Status Bar when a specific ebook tool is highlighted.


4.   Book Section Profiles


The book is organized for sequential reading. Brief profiles of the major sections follow.

Front Matter: A number of informational pages are organized between the book's Front Cover and the Table of Contents. They include: Preface, Title, Copyright, Book Purchaser, Book Features, Book Benefits, Acknowledgement/Disclaimer, Dedication, How To Use This Book, and Whitehorse Ebook Philosophy.

Table of Contents: Start by reviewing the Table of Contents to get a sense of the book's contents. It is accessible from every HTML page. A detailed Table of Contents, listing all the book's sections and sub-sections (over 950), is also accessible from the Table of Contents page.

Section 1, Introduction: Proceed to the Introduction where you'll find a detailed overview of the online work-at-home jungle and the investigation pursued by this book.

Section 2, Investigative Approach: Discusses the investigative approach used to uncover the truth about online work.
